Elijah Part 9 - 2 Kings 2
The spirit of Elijah is the Holy Spirit, the spirit of truth, all about being a bold witness, a messenger. John the Baptist was a type of Elijah. In 2 Kings as Elijah passes the mantle to Elisha, Elisha is reluctant to accept, a good sign that he takes the office of prophet seriously. Elijah and Moses weren't great prophets in and of themselves; they thrived on God's grace and providence.
Elijah was taken up to Heaven without dying, like Jesus was. Straight to the presence of the Father! This is how it will be for us if we are sealed with the Spirit of the Lord; when we die, we'll be in his presence or we'll be cast away. Or Jesus will return first, and snatch us up in the middle of whatever we're doing-- we must live our lives in such a way that we're ready to meet him at any moment!
The Spirit of Elijah is the spirit of truth, conviction. The power of God is not in the fire or the earthquake, but in the voice of God. If your faith is in Jesus, you have the exact same spirit!
God is kind to take care of us after he saves us. Temptations are hard, and we need his help. He gives to us generously.
There is one hero in all of scripture, and it's God. Not Moses, not Elijah. Ask the Father for the Holy Spirit, as he gives generously to all who ask. Since it's he who empowers us to serve, we can never boast in our own works!
